What is this?
A free, private planner that helps trans and non-binary people in the UK work out the steps they need to take to update their name and gender marker on their documents.
Be myself helps you work out what needs updating so you spend less time navigating confusing paperwork and more time simply being yourself.
Who is it for?
Anyone aged 16 or over who wants to update their name, their gender marker, or both on UK documents they hold. That includes people living in the UK, people living abroad, and people planning to move to the UK, such as people with a visa or eVisa. People under 16 need parental consent and follow a different process, which this planner does not cover.
What does it cover?
Updating your name, your gender marker, or both, on:
- a deed poll or statutory declaration
- your UK passport, your Irish passport, or your home country passport and UK eVisa
- your driving licence and vehicle logbook (V5C)
- your NHS or GP record, HMRC and tax records, and benefits
- DBS, Disclosure Scotland and AccessNI checks
- work, student and professional records
- banks, utilities, the electoral register and other services
- a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) and your birth certificate
- the Irish passport route for people born in Northern Ireland
Is my information safe?
Yes. Nothing you enter is sent to a server or stored outside your own device, unless you share a link to your plan: the link holds your answers, and they reach the website's host when it is opened. Your progress is saved in your browser so you can return to it later. Press the red ⚠️ button at any time to instantly leave the page, or press Esc twice within a second. This does not delete your saved plan, so on a shared device, use a private window. For full details, see Privacy.
How does it work?
You answer a short set of questions about your situation: what documents you already have, what you have already updated, and what you want to do. The planner builds a step-by-step action plan with links to the relevant official pages.
Step-by-step or checklist?
Both produce the same plan. The step-by-step wizard shows one question at a time, which works well if you are not sure where to start. The checklist shows everything at once, which is better if you already know your situation. You can switch between them at any time.
Is this legal advice?
No. This planner gives general guidance only. It does not replace advice from a qualified professional. Always check important steps on official government pages before submitting any applications.
How do I save or share my plan?
Your plan is saved in your browser and will still be here the next time you visit on the same device. To access it from another device, or share it with someone, use the 🔗 Copy link button on the toolbar. This copies a link that contains your full plan. You can also use 🖨️ Print to save a PDF. There is no account or login needed.
Can I use this offline?
Yes. This is a single web page with no external files, so you can save it to your device (usually Ctrl+S, or File > Save page as > HTML only) and use it offline. Alternatively, use the download button below.
If you already have an action plan, use the 🔗 Copy link button on the toolbar to preserve it for use offline or on other devices. For offline use, open your saved .html file in your browser and paste your copied link onto the end of the address, removing "https://bemyself.uk/" so that you keep everything after it.
